Lawn

Starting from scratch can be frustrating and difficult. Especially if your house is newly built. It may take years for your lawn, trees and landscaping to fully mature. But, if you follow the tips below, you can save time, money and frustration and have the yard of your dreams before you know it.

If your yard is completely barren, you will need to buy grass seed. When it comes to buying grass seed, typically the more you pay, the better grass seed you’ll get. Faster growing grass seed isn’t always better either. It’s a smarter choice to pick the best grass seed for your lawn. Usually, what the homebuilder puts down isn’t always the best grass seed, so make sure what you choose is quality. We can help you pick out the best grass seed for your yard but if you decide to pick the grass seed on your own make sure it has the right variety of turf-grasses. Another important factor to consider when you are choosing grass seed is the amount of sun exposure your lawn gets. Be sure to look into this when you pick the grass seed for your new lawn.

Before you put the seed down on the dirt, make sure it is broken up. The grass will only be as good as its soil. For the best yard, you’ll need at least six inches of topsoil to start. If you need more topsoil, make sure you put some soil down. You can always add on if you are starting with enough dirt but if you are starting with less than six inches, you may have some problems. If your dirt has been heavily moved around, it may take longer for your lawn to fully mature. You can contact us if you think this is going to be a project bigger than you can handle and we will make sure your lawn blossoms. Once you have chosen the type of seed and have checked the topsoil, apply the grass seed and make sure you water it! It will take about a year before your lawn’s root system is fully mature.

Trees

If your new home as a lot of older tress, you’ll want to schedule a visit by an arborist to check out your trees. The construction process can damage or kill trees, even long after your home has been built so checking with a professional can help ensure your trees are happy and healthy. Also make sure your contractor doesn’t disturb the root zones of the trees. The roots are the driving life force and if the root zones or the trees drip line are disturbed it can be detrimental to the trees health. If some trees need to be removed, the arborist can help make a determination about which trees should be kept and which should be removed. Large trees can provide shade for your house in the summer and let in light during the winter, keeping your heating and cooling costs low. Also taking out larger trees may make it more difficult for younger trees to grow so the arborist can help with that too.

Shrubbery

Typically, your new house will include some shrubbery and a few trees. Its important that you have someone who knows what looks good create a plan for the outside of your house based on how you want your new home to look. If you need recommendations, contact us and we can help connect you to the right people. The landscaper will know what looks good and which plants to choose to give you the best look for your house. If you work with us, we can help connect you with people that are going to help you save money.

Hardscape

There are many different types of material you can use to create walkways and patios. The type you choose for your new yard is going to make a big difference. One of the biggest things that changes depending on the material you choose is cost. Concrete is typically the least expensive but it is susceptible to settling and cracking. You can always replace concrete with better materials later, but its going to be expensive. You’ll have to rip out the concrete and your going to have to replace the grass around the areas you’re replacing.  It may be worth it to just invest money at the beginning into natural stone. This will give your land an incredible finish and may be easier in the long run.
